Mat 7:12-16
Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. ...
Jesus summed up the law with the law of love and went on making a call for people to enter in the strait gate. He continued on explaining his call because the gate is strait and the way is narrow and FEW FIND IT.
I think that it's that part that many overlooked, the 'Find' part. Jesus didn't say something like few can live in it, or few want it, or few like it, or few are able, but instead: few find it.
And then Jesus continued his teaching about knowing the true prophet out of the false ones. Which can be known by checking the fruit.
So my point is: the difficult part is not how to walk in the path even if the path itself is difficult (which a brother in the previous answer said work) but to find the gate (which is Jesus, I assume). Finding the true Jesus is not easy if you are not careful checking the fruit.
Because when you find Jesus, even though the path is very very difficult: it won't be so difficult to walk in, because we can do everything through Jesus Christ (and we see again with that how the grace still reign in our salvation). We got to just trust him, and ask for his full help.
By the way, the gate is strait because you need repentance to get into it.
So if we get back to the question, then this is what I say:
The difficult path Jesus spoke of is the Christian life, which is life of love, doing to others what we want them to do to us (Mat 7:12)
Remain blessed, in the Holy Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
